Nigeria’s power sector is undergoing a historic transformation and young Nigerians now have a rare opportunity to be part of this national change. Through the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), the Federal Government is launching a large-scale Meter Installer and Electrical House Wiring Training Programme for 5,000 Nigerian youths in 2026. This initiative is designed to close Nigeria’s metering gap, end estimated billing, protect electricity consumers and strengthen the electricity market across the country.
This programme is implemented by the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), an institution for energy and power training, research and development. Under this program, young Nigerians will be trained in practical and technical skills opening opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and national development.
A National Vision to End Estimated Billing
The Presidential Metering Initiative was established to reduce the long practice estimated bill in the power sector which will protect electricity consumers and strengthen the electricity market.
Through the Presidential Metering Initiative, which was established to close Nigeria’s long-standing metering gap, end estimated billing, protect consumers, and strengthen the electricity market, the Federal Government is opening a new pathway for 5,000 young Nigerians to be trained as meter installers and technicians under The Power Force.
Collaboration Across Key Institutions
The Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) will be impmented by Federal Ministry of Youth Development, NAPTIN and other relevant stakeholders and is set to commence within the next 30 days.
Successful candidates are encouraged to join the Power Force, participate in the programme and learn a valuable skills and contribute to the ending of estimated billing of electricity in Nigeria.
Why the PMI Meter Installer Training Matters
The Federal Government in its effort to end estimated billing across the country is increasing the number of certified meter installers with just 1,000 currently which is far below the required numbers to address the shortage of about 5 Million metering deficit across the country.
Due to this deficit, additional 4,000 installers will be employed within the next 2 years to support the metering of electricity consumers in Nigeria. Trainees will be trained mentored by NAPTIN and will receive certification by the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA).
Certification by NEMSA will give the participants national recognition in technical and safety standards which will open doors for many opportunities for them in the power and energy sector.
Who Can Apply?
The PMI Meter Installer and Electrical House Wiring Training Programme is open to eligible Nigerians who meet the following criteria:
- Must be a Nigerian citizen between 18 and 35 years.
- Must have a science background
- Must have completed a minimum of SSCE or equivalent.
- Open to NYSC members and students of Technical and Vocational institutions.
- Candidates must possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN).
- Applicants must be physically and mentally fit for the task.
- Must show willingness to learn and participate in th power sector.
- Applicants without previous experience are eligible to apply.

Training Structure and Certification
The PMI Meter Installation Course fully sponsored by the Federal Government and applicants will be feed and sheltered during the 3 weeks training. The training will involve theoritical and practical sessions.
By the end of the programme, successful trainees will receive government recognised professional certificate by NAPTIN and NEMSA. This certificate qualifies trainees to get employed and work with the electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) nationwide.
